Piano lessons · a Navigo pilot

Learning from a book? Meet a teacher.

Most people who buy our books teach themselves, and most of the time that works. When it stops working, one lesson with the right teacher usually unsticks it.

  • Free introduction
  • Introduced the moment you ask
  • You pay the teacher directly

How it works

No app, no algorithm. Three steps, and a person at each one.

  1. Pick a teacher

Read the cards below and ask for an introduction to the one who fits. Not sure? Choose “no preference” and say what you need; we will suggest someone.

  2. Just ask and we introduce you immediately

The moment you send the form, one email goes to you and the teacher together, with your note included, so you both have each other’s address and one thread to reply to. Nicholas at Navigo is copied on it and reads every one.

  3. First lesson, over video or in person

You and the teacher agree times directly. Nothing is signed, there is nothing to cancel if it is not for you, and we step out of the thread.

What it costs: the introduction is free. If you go ahead, you pay the teacher directly at the rates on the card. Navigo takes no commission and never handles the money.

The teachers

Independent teachers we have spoken to ourselves. The list is small on purpose and grows as teachers join.

A pilot, not a marketplace: we would rather introduce you to a teacher we have actually spoken to than list forty names we have not. If nobody here is right for you, say so in the form and we will tell you honestly.

Ask for an introduction

Two minutes, no account.

Who is learning?

Just ask and we introduce you immediately: one email to you and the teacher together, with Nicholas at Navigo copied.

Your note and your email address go to one teacher, and nowhere else. No mailing list.

Questions people ask

Is this free?

Asking is free and so is the introduction. If you go ahead with lessons, you pay the teacher directly at the rates shown on the card. Navigo takes no commission during the pilot; if that ever changes, we will say so on this page before it does.

How are the teachers chosen?

Every teacher on this page has spoken with us directly, sent us a bio and rates in their own words, and agreed to take introductions from Navigo readers. They are independent teachers, not Navigo staff. We keep the list short on purpose: we would rather introduce you to someone we know than list forty names we do not.

Online or in person?

Every teacher here teaches over video. John Cavicchio also teaches in person in Freehold, New Jersey. Use the Online and In person filters above. If you are outside the United States, put your time zone in your note and we will tell you straight away whether it can work, rather than wasting your week.

What if it is not a fit?

Say so, to the teacher or to us. Nothing is signed and there is no contract with Navigo in the middle: lessons are bought one at a time or by the month, directly from the teacher. If you would like a different introduction, ask, and we will tell you honestly whether we have one.

Is it for children?

Yes. Catherine Sipher teaches students from age five and John Cavicchio teaches all ages. Choose “My child” in the form and give the age. A parent or guardian joins the first lesson and is the teacher’s point of contact from then on.

Do the teachers use the Navigo books?

No. They are independent teachers with their own methods, and that is deliberate. The books are optional: if you are working through one, say which and how far you have got, and the teacher will tell you whether to build the lessons around it or take you somewhere else.

For teachers

Are you a piano teacher?

During the pilot, being on this list is free and so are the introductions. The people who write to us are unusually good enquiries:

  • They already own a beginner book and have been practising on their own, so they arrive with a habit and a specific question.
  • They come to you through a personal introduction that includes their note, not a cold form fill.
  • You set your own rates and are paid directly. Navigo takes nothing during the pilot.

Tell us a little about your studio and we will be in touch. If it looks like a fit, we will ask for a short bio, your rates in your own words and a photo.
